BONO HAS SAID he may never play guitar again after a bike accident last year left him with a titanium-plated elbow.
Back in November 2014, Bono broke his arm in six places after falling off his bike in Central Park – he had extensive surgery and cancelled all public appearances to focus on getting better before U2′s world tour later this year.
In a letter published yesterday on the band’s website, Bono described the day of the accident, and how he ended up in hospital with his humerus bone “sticking through [his] leather jacket.”
“Very punk rock as injuries go,” he quipped.
The singer revealed that he now has a titanium elbow, but still has a long way to go to fully recover from the accident:
Recovery has been more difficult than I thought. As I write this, it is not clear that I will ever play guitar again. The band have reminded me that neither they nor Western civilisation are depending on this.
He said he would miss playing guitar, but didn’t know many guitarists who had titanium elbows:
I personally would very much miss fingering the frets of my green Irish falcon or my (RED) Gretsch. Just for the pleasure, aside from writing tunes. But then does the Edge, or Jimmy Page, or any guitarist you know have a titanium elbow, as I do now? I’m all elbows, I am.
Orthopaedic trauma surgeon Dean Lorich told Rolling Stone that although the singer will require “intensive and progressive therapy”, a full recovery is expected. Get well soon, Bono.
